Abstract

ABSTRACT A research about the role of tithonia and fist waste as liquid organic fertilizer to improve soil chemical characteristics and increase N absorption of melon (Cucumis melo) in Ultisols was conducted at Green House of Agriculture Faculty, Andalas University. The objective of the research were to study appropriate dose of application of synthetic N fertilizer, tithonia and fish waste to improve soil chemical characteristics, also to identify tithonia and fish waste to the effect of application of synthetic N fertilizer, tithonia and fish waste to increase N absorption by melon compared to application of 100% Urea. The treatment were: A= 100% Urea, B = 50% Urea + 50% tithonia, C = 50% Urea + 50 % fish waste, D = 25% Urea + 75% tithonia, E = 25% Urea + 75% fish waste, F = 50% Urea + 25% fish waste + 25 % tithonia. Amount of N applied at each treatment was equal to 233 kg N/ha. The result showed that the optimal dose was 25% Urea + 75 % tithonia, because it improved chemical characteristics of Ultisols and increased N absorption by melon. Application of 25% Urea + 75% tithonea increased soil pH, organic-C, CEC, total-N, available-P, Ca, Mg, and K of Ultisols by 0.68 unit, 1.89%, 11.41% cmol/kg, 0.19%, 13.15 ppm, 0.99 cmol/kg, 0.72 cmol/kg and 0.21 cmol/kg, respectively compared to 100% Urea. Furthermore application of 25% Urea + 75% tithonia increased plant height, N and P absorption by 61%, 46% and 38%, respectively compared to 100% Urea.
