Abstract

The family is a social institution where individuals live from birth to death. Families from different parts of the world have a variety of structures that change from time to time in accordance with the era. The family and its structure are also discussed in literary works. Ogawa Yoko, a Japanese female writer depicted family issues in her work. Her novel Kotori describe the family in Japanese Society. In this paper, Kotori is discussed by using sociology of literature and concept of the family. From the analysis, it is found that Ogawa depicts the changes in family structure through experienced by protagonist from birth to death. The Changing of family structure in this novel is divided into four categories: the nuclear family, single parent families, sibling family, and hitori gurashi or families whose members consist of only one person. Changes in family structure occur due to death, unmarried, and not adopting children. As a result of changing family structure is muenshi.
