Abstract

This study describes the dramaturgy model performed by lower-class sex workers in Pasar Raya (Central Market) area in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Sex workers operating on the second floor of the Central Market dominated by divorcees. They led a double life as prostitute to make ends meet and family care-taker. This study was conducted using in-depth interviews with reference to Erving Goffman dramaturgical theory. The result of the study provides an overview of ‘on the stage (front stage)’ appearanceas sex workers locally infamous as ‘Poyok’ the seductive appearance they keep to show professionalism. While ‘backstage’ they shift cover as responsible single parent to the children.
