Abstract

Computer mediated communication has been widely used among young people fo' communication. Facebook is one of the social networking sites which provide a place for socia networking. Students of the English Department, Andalas University are multilingual; the' switch among the languages they know, including from lndonesian to English. The stud ' investigates the types of code switching mainly used and to know students' attitude to Code Switching and to know if it was influenced by their knowledge about English. Data is collectec through online observation in student's Facebook wall (1"10 accounts), the messages posted b.' the students' in their Facebook wall are collected and online survey is conducted (n= 51). The finding shows that Students use Facebook for social purposes and also for studying. The type of code switching mainly used is inter-sentential; students are able to produce sentences ir- English. English is used to fill the gap; they switch to English to explain the expressions c' phrases that they cannot find the equivalent of in lndonesian. Students also show positive attitudes towards English. English is a language to communicate with larger audiences anc opens opportunities to get a good job, but they do not show strong opinions that English is more appreciated. Students believe that both of the languages can support their socia activities and also English learning. They can use both lndonesian and English to make the communication understood for friends in their networks.
