Abstract
According to WHO, in 2019 more than 463 million people in the world suffer from diabetes and this humber tends to rise. This rise has caused an increase on the use of antidiabetic drugs. Various antidiabetic drugs have been used to treat diabetes, including herbal medicines. One of the medicinal plants that has blood glucose lowering activity is brotowali (Tinospora crispa). The research aimed to prove antidiabetic activity of herbal products belonging to jamu which is produced by small enterprise (UMOT) containing brotowali. Antidiabetic activity was tested using glucose tolerance and alloxan induced diabetes methods. Results showed that the extract contained the compounds of alkaloid, flavonoid, and steroid/triterpenoid groups. Antidiabetes evaluation showed that in glucose tolerance test, the extract inhibited the increase of glucose level up to 18.29; 51.17 and 75.35% (p<0.05) with the dose of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kgBB, respectively. In alloxan-induced diabetic mice, the extract decreased glucose level, with the highest decrease of 75.35% was given by a dose of 500 mg/kgBB. Based on the data, it could be concluded that the extract of herbal medicine product which contains active component brotowali has antidiabetes activity. The active compound responsible for antidiabetes is need to be further studied
