Abstract

Bintangor (Calophyllum soulattri Burm. F) is a plant from the Clusiaceae family. Some parts of this plant such as the stem bark have been used as traditional medicine. The purpose of this research was to determine the total phenolic content, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the stem bark of bintangor in the form of extracts and fractions. The stem bark was extracted maceration technique with ethanol extract, followed by fractionation with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol. The obtained extract and fractions were tested for the total phenolic content using the Folin-Ciaocalteau method. The antioxidant activity was determined using the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power method, while the antibacterial activity was evaluated by diffusion agar method against bacterial pathogen. The study found that the highest total phenolic content was obtained from the ethanol extract (62.76 g/ 100 g), as well as the highest antioxidant activity (4.29 mmol Fe (II)/ 100 g). The best antibacterial activities were shown by ethanol extract with minimum inhibitory concentration 0.8%, resulting in inhibitory diameter of 6.96 mm; followed by n-hexane fraction (0.9%, resulting in inhibitory diameter of 6.63 mm); ethyl acetate fraction (0.625%, resulting in inhibitory diameter of 6.28 mm); and butanol fraction (0.5% resulting inhibitory diameter of 6.03 mm.
