Abstract
Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) is designed to optimise antibiotic by implementing policies, strategies and guidelines. This study aimed to investigate physicians’ perceptions towards ASP, and to identify their preferences of ASP strategies. A qualitative study using a semi-structured interview with physicians, in a public hospital in Surabaya was conducted to explore: 1) perception towards ASP implementation, and 2) preferences of ASP strategies. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. A number of 27 physicians participated. In general, physicians reported positive responses regarding ASP implementation. Three issues on implementing ASP identified were: 1) to implement ASP is a consequence of being part of professional communities in the hospital; 2) to implement ASP is relevant to the improvement of hospital quality, and 3) to implement ASP if certain resources were made available. Most physicians selected ‘development of the therapeutic guideline and clinical pathway’ as the ASP strategy of choice. The rationale of selecting specific strategy included: 1) agreement within hospital communities; 2) practicability and feasibility; and 3) use of research evidence. This present study provided insights into Indonesian physicians’ perceptions towards ASP implementation. The findings can be used as a basis in developing appropriate ASP strategies within the Indonesian hospital context
