Abstract

Incorporating good ergonomic principles during the design stage of the manufacturing and assembly facilities, especially in the manual workplaces, has become increasingly important. This activity can result in many benefits, including reductions in development costs, increased process efficiency as well as improved worker safety and motivation. Planner and engineer are becoming more and more reliant upon ergonomic simulation tools to address these design issues. These simulation tools allow the designer to incorporate numerous workplace design aspects such as working postures, reach and visibility, enabling optimal ergonomic design on the performed tasks and the identification of the potential health risks. Traditional workplace design and redesign, based on the results of ergonomics evaluations, are time consuming and often unfeasible in the industry. Therefore, modern design methods with application of computer-based tools are a promising solution. The Virtual Manufacturing approach using computer-generated three-dimensional human models on CAD software system enables manual workplaces to be designed and simulated virtually according to the anthropometric rules in order to get more comfortable postures and prevent human injuries. This kind of computer aided tool for workplace design simplifies the analysis of the human factors in working systems and allows a greater level of detail incorporated with a number of analyses.
