Abstract
Abstract Abstract Water is part of physical environment that plays very important roles in human life. Dug wells are one of the water sources that are used to meet people needs for water. The survey in Pariaman municipality shows that 65.86 percent of the people still use dug wells for their water needs because dug wells are relatively easy to construct and the construction can be performed by themselves with simple tools and relatively cheap cost. Unfortunately, the wells are potentially susceptible to contaminants if they do not pay enough attention to construction requirements and well location. The independent variables that were observed in this study are distance of contaminants source, physical conditions of dug wells, and users’ conditions and behaviour, and the dependent variable is the quality of dug wells. The parameters that were analysed to determine the quality of dug wells include pH, COD, BOD, and CaCO3. The analysis shows that the BOD is higher than the standard value as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 82 2001. This higher BOD is attributable to poor management of domestic waste and inadequate distance (11 metres) of contaminants source from the dug well. Keywords: contaminants source, dug wells, water quality
