Abstract
The existence of genetic variability of Al tolerance among maize inbred lines is necessary towards development of hybrid varieties tolerant to acid soils. Eighteen maize inbred lines were evaluated in field. The evaluation was carried out using Split Plots arranged in a RCB Design with three replications, where soil acidity conditions were assigned to the main-plots and maize inbred lines were assigned to the sub-plots. The objectives of the study were to select inbred lines tolerant to acid soils and to estimate heritability of tolerance to Al, and to assess genetic diversity among maize inbred lines based on SSR markers. The results obtained from evaluation in the field showed a distinctive genotypic variability of maize inbred lines to Al toxicity. Inbred lines SM 7-11 and IPB-12 were consistently tolerant to Al toxicity. Estimates of heritability for tolerance to Al were moderate, indicating that there was a substantial amount of genetic variation in the control of tolerance to Al among the inbred lines population evaluated. Based on SSR markers, genetic distance among the inbred lines ranged from 0.29 and 0.82, while the average PIC value was 0.64, indicating that the inbred lines population used in this study were highly diverse.
