Abstract

This research evaluated the hypoglycaemic effect of several Leucaena leucocephala (lmk)De Wit extracts in various polar solvents. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the hypoglycaemic activity of the extracts and their chromatogram profiles on Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The hypoglycaemic tests were conducted on male mice divided into six groups of hyperglycaemic mice and one group of normal mice as the control. Each group consists of 5 mice. Th group A: 0,5 g/kgBW n-hexane extract administered orally to hyperglycaemic mice daily for 14 days, e treatment of the hyperglycaemic mouse groups are group B: 0,5 g/kgBW ethylacetate extract administered orally to hyperglycaemic mice daily for 14 days; group C: 0,5 g/kgBW methanol extract administered orally to hyperglycaemic mice daily for 14 days; group D: 0,5 g/kgBW water extract administered orally to hyperglycaemic mice daily for 14 days; group E: 0,5 g/kgBW direct methanol extract administered orally to hyperglycaemic mice daily for 14 days; The blood samples were taken from the vena on the mouse tails on day 0, 3, 7 and 14 and the blood glucose were evaluated using glucometer. The results of the research show that all extract has hypoglycaemic activity; however, the extracts in polar solvents such direct methanol and water show higher hypoglycaemic activities than those in non-polar solvents like n-hexane and ethylacetate.
